Acoustic Baffle Facts
• XTC Acoustic Baffles provide your speakers with many benefits beside the primary design
goal of water and moisture protection. XTC Acoustic Baffles are made from our acoustic foam
products, not the hard plastic type that can actually create internal moisture from condensation
build up. The acoustic foam will also flex to work within your mounting area unlike a ridged hard
plastic baffle. With the foam XTC Acoustic Baffles the back wave will be damped unlike a hard
plastic or metal panel surface that will reflect back to the speaker cone.
• Automotive environments can damage a speaker by allowing dust to enter the voice coil gap.
The voice coil must be centered to work over the magnet pole. A cloth weave spider is used to
do this. The spider needs to be porous so that air is not trapped and stalls the driver or creates
noise while in operation. Most high quality speakers will have a very tight voice coil gap. This
leaves very little room for any dust partials to enter before a “rubbing” sound will appear in the
speaker. XTC Acoustic Baffles will stop dust and dirt from getting to your speaker.
• Small cone speakers, under 8 inches, can be easily over driven by high volume or excessive tone
gain or E.Q. adjustments. The usual result is that the voice coil with bottom to the back plate of
the magnet structure. This will “flare” the voice coil and permanently damage the speaker. XTC
Acoustic Baffles provide a rear chamber for your speaker that loads the back wave of the cone
to cushion the speaker’s suspension to reduce voice coil bottoming. This loading effect will also
add to many speakers some additional power handling. Most modern speakers are made with
high temperature glues and formers like Kapton that will hold up to high wattage inputs. The
limitation is then the compliance of the speaker cone assembly. Loading the speaker in the
XTC Acoustic Baffles will increase the stability of these speakers.
• Panel isolation is critical for good vocal reproduction and accurate detail of your speakers. XTC
Acoustic Baffles will provide an isolation gasket between your speaker and panel mounting
surfaces when front loaded to the provided Acoustic Baffle flange. The flange can also be easily
trimmed to match your speaker grill or door panel.
• Water and moisture do more than cone damage. The magnet top, bottom and pole plates are
usually made from stamped steel and then zinc plated including the center pole. Over time the
plating will rust and in the case of the center pole this will cause the voice coil to rub and
damage your speaker. XTC Acoustic Baffles will stop water damage to the cones and plated
components. Electrical connections are also protected to prevent shorting at the speaker
terminals and tinsel leads. Without this protection water may short out the amplifier output at
the speaker terminals and cause damage to the amplifier output stage.
• Your speaker works by transferring the electrical energy that energizes the voice coil to the
speaker cone and creates the audio or sonic output that you hear. This effect can also reproduce
mechanical transferred noise. By acoustically coupling to the back of the speaker’s cone road
noise, panel noise and any other outside noise from your door panel or trunk area will be passed
to the speaker cone. XTC Acoustic Baffles provide damping to decouple the back wave noise
from your speaker so that you are not reproducing outside noise in your audio signal.
• Cleaner sounding audio with more detailed music from your speakers will be noticed when
used with the XTC Acoustic Baffles. The isolation and acoustic damping the Acoustic Baffles
provide will enhance your speaker’s ability to produce better sounding and more accurate detail
program material along with improved transient stability. Sound bouncing around in a nonisolated
chamber, especially if made from sheet metal, will reflect to the speaker cone and
distort and corrupt the audio. Additional fine tuning can be done by adding small amounts of
Dacron or fiberglass to the inside of the Acoustic Baffle.
• Over time dust and dirt can accumulate on the backs of your speaker cones and surrounds
unless protected from these elements. These minerals can damage and deteriorate the speaker
surrounds and many cone materials. The added mass from dust and dirt can also cause the
speaker cones to become unevenly weighted causing the voice coil to rub due to off centering.
This is even a greater problem in higher quality speakers with tighter tolerances. XTC Acoustic
Baffles will help to eliminate this build up and extend your speakers life and sound quality.
• Rear deck mounted speakers can be damaged if air access to the back of the speaker is
allowable from the trunk area. When closing a trunk lid large amounts of air are displaced and
can push the speaker voice coil and cone assemble out of the voice coil gap. XTC Acoustic
Baffles can prevent the back air pressure from reaching the speaker cone. Coupling noise from
the trunk will also be reduced or eliminated.
• XTC Acoustic Baffles have extended millions of speaker’s lives for over 30 years. Still proudly
